Kilrea said there is no change in the ongoing lawsuit. Besides the school districts in Cook County, every other district manages their finances in house. Jim Durkin has tried to pass legislation that would do away with the treasurer’s office, as Cook County is the only remaining county in Illinois bound by law to use the office. “It’s not like we’re not paying anything to this office and we’re not accessing any services. “Let’s remind everyone in here that for six years in a row this district has paid over $200,000 annually to this office,” Kilrea said. Kilrea assured the board he cleared his recommendation to not pay the full bill with the district’s legal counsel and he added that the treasurer’s office is a wholly unnecessary office, because the district can manage its own payroll and its own investment portfolio. The current treasurer’s office board alleges LTHS owes more than $5 million in unpaid fees and is suing the school district to get the money. Healy pleaded guilty to stealing $100,000 from the treasurer’s office. The district is alleging they had an agreement with former treasurer, Robert Healy, who allegedly verbally assured the district that it didn’t have to pay for certain services the district could manage in house. He said that for the last six years, the district has declined to pay the full bill. “It’s been our position on the board were not going to pay the (treasurer’s office) to sue ourselves,” Kilrea said. Kilrea told board members the district should not pay legal fees incurred by the treasurer’s office for its lawsuit against the district or for specialty accounting software the district cannot access or use directly. The invoice was $321,265, though the board only agreed to pay $201,501.īy law, the district has to use the treasurer’s office to manage district funds, including payroll management and investments, even though the treasurer’s office is suing the district and billing for the legal fees. The Lyons Township High School District 204 Board voted Monday to pay part of its Lyons Township School Treasurer’s Office fees, even as Superintendent Timothy Kilrea protested the bill.
